"Anything that detracts from strength or from the functioning of the nervous system will impede maximum athletic performance"
- Frederick And Frederick
When there is stress to a muscle, or area of the body, your fascia will take action as an attempt to bring blood flow to the area. In doing so, your fascia begins sticking together, creating adhesions. The longer those adhesions are there, the more you ignore those areas, the more your fascia begins to solidify which creates more tightness.
Your fascia is made up of collagen and water. When there's a restriction to your fascia, water can't penetrate the tissue resulting in dehydration. When collagen becomes dehydrated, it solidifies into a tacky, gummy ball, which ultimately creates tightness and pain.
The longer you ignore it the worse it gets, because when there is restricted fluid flow (think blood, lymphatics, etc.,) the more dehydrated the fascia gets. This results in the feeling of tightness in the body. Tightness also leads to pain.
When there are adhesions in your fascia, your level of strength is inhibited. When your range of motion is restricted because of a fascial adhesion, this makes other areas of the body work harder. Think of the word "compensation". When the job of the motion is not evenly distributed to the muscles it should be distributed to, we have compensation and therefore overloading one area of the body which ultimately leads to risk of injury.
